Mexican Sports Parties
Popular Sports in Mexico: Fútbol, Boxing, Baseball, and More.
Mexican sports fans love to gather around a television with friends, family, and a plate of delicious snacks.
You can’t host a sports party without game-winning game-watching food. But, before we dive into the best snacks to serve at your next sports fiesta, let’s learn about four of the most popular sports in Mexico.
The most popular sport in Mexico is fútbol (soccer). Mexico has been home to lively professional and amateur fútbol leagues for over 100 years and boasts a successful national team. Mexico hosted the World Cup in 1970 and 1986 and advanced to the quarterfinal round both years.
Mexican sports fans adore Antonio Carbajal, who played in five World Cups, and Hugo Sánchez, who is considered by some to be the best player from North or Central America of the 20th century.
Boxing is the most popular individual sport in Mexico for good reason. No country has produced more world champions in the last three decades and only the U.S. has produced more world champions all-time.
The biggest star in Mexican boxing is Julio César Chávez Sr., who won multiple world championships in three weight divisions between 1980 and 2005.
In addition to fútbol and boxing, baseball is a popular sport in Mexico’s northwest and southeast regions. Mexico hosts winter and summer professional baseball leagues and has sent over 100 players to the U.S. major leagues including Cy Young Award winner Fernando Valenzuela and slugger Vinny Castilla.
Professional American football has rapidly become popular among Mexican sports fans since Mexican television stations began broadcasting games in the 1970s. Today, the NFL estimates that it has 20.6 million fans in Mexico and that 2.9 million Mexican children play flag football in gym class each year.
